JANE LAPOTAIRE TO STAR IN SHORT FILM IN DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY (press release 13/09/04)

A short film, written and directed by local film-maker Amy Neil from New Galloway, is due to start filming in the region on 22 September, starring Jane Lapotaire.

The short film looks at the potentially explosive relationship between a woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease and her daughter, who is her primary carer. It will be filmed on location in New Galloway, with support from Scottish Screen and the South West Scotland Screen Commission.

Jane LapotaireJane Lapotaire is one of the country's most distinguished actresses. She has won awards for her work on TV and in the theatre in both the UK and America. Her television performance as Marie Curie earned her a BAFTA and she played Edith Piaf in Pam Gems' acclaimed Piaf, which she also recreated on Broadway.

She has recently published an autobiography, Time Out of Mind, in which she recounts her recovery from a life-threatening cerebral haemorrhage.

Amy Neil studied film in Japan, and her first short film 'Unthink' has been broadcast on Sky Mystery Channel as well as at several international film festivals. For the last two years, she has been working as a script supervisor on several short films, including a film shot at the Cannes Film Festival, while working on writing her own material.

"I'm really pleased that Amy has chosen to return to Galloway to make this short film", said Belle Doyle, the Council's Film Officer, who runs the South West Scotland Screen Commission.

"She has worked hard at her writing and directing skills, and this is a great chance for her to show how talented she is."

Ravinder Basra, who is an experienced BBC Producer and is producing "Can't Stop Breathing", says the support from local businesses for this short film has been wonderful, and she hopes to produce more films in the area.

Ravinder is still looking for more funding to complete this project and is optimistic the business community will help further. If you are interested in helping to support the film, please contact the Screen Commission on 01387 263666 for further information.

It is planned that the completed short film, 'Can't Stop Breathing' will be screened at film festivals around the world.
