and Villages > Dumfries on the River Nith
The town of Dumfries is the administrative centre of the
region, with a population of 34,000. Lively and attractive
with some of the houses painted in soft colours of blue,
cream, green or buff, and most of the important buildings
in red sandstone, making a pleasing mixture.
The pedestrianised
High Street contains a large fountain, and the Midsteeple,
the old prison/council office, built in 1705.
