Dumfries from the South
Driving up the M6, stay on the motorway as it becomes
the A74 (M) at Carlisle. Turn off at Gretna at Junction
22, and take the A75 east to Dumfries. This part of the
journey takes about half-an-hour.
Dumfries from Glasgow
Exit at J15 and take the A701.
For a slower, more scenic route you can also exit the
M74 at J14 and go along the A702 to Thornhill and go down
the A76 to Dumfries. You will need to turn left onto the
A75 when you reach the outskirts of Dumfries.
You can also exit at Lockerbie at J17 and take the A709,
via Lochmaben to Dumfries.
Dumfries from Edinburgh
You can take a number of different A roads – the
A702, the A701, or the A708, but the trip might be quicker
on the M8/ M74 via Glasgow.
Please note that signs out of Edinburgh will be for ‘Carlisle
and the South’.
